Description
The internationally recognized Km0 concept was first informally tested in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo by the Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Mediterranean Environmental Studies at the University of Évora.
Test success led to further implementation in the highly touristic Evora region in Alentejo through a certification process that formally identified local foodstuffs, from production to transformation and sales in shops and catering establishments. Km0 Alentejo was ready to be launched in October 2017 as a means of disseminating the concept and building partnerships.
Since then, joint work has been carried out to build networks of contacts and seek funding to support the start of this initiative in a sustainable manner.

The Km0 Referential aims to define criteria for certification, which gives guarantees to consumers of the certified restaurant and to the customers of the sales outlet, that the products classified as Km0 are in fact originating from local production, a maximum radius of 50 km from the place of consumption or sale to the final consumer. Each certified operator will be georeferenced and inserted in an electronic platform (see MAP) where it will be possible to view production, purchase and consumption locations for Km0 certified products.
In a first phase, the application of Km0 certification is foreseen in the Municipality of Évora, which could potentially and desirably be extended to other Municipalities in the region.
